About St. Martin’s Eve at Dragsholm Slot

Saint Martin lived from AD 336 to 397 and became a monk at the age of 20. After being driven from his homeland, in what is now Hungary, he settled in Gaul, where he lived at a monastery near Poitiers.

He became known as a deeply religious and honourable man, and the people of Tours eventually wished to appoint him bishop. Martin, however, had no desire to take on the role and hid among a flock of geese to avoid being found.

The geese began to cackle and revealed his hiding place, and Martin was consequently made bishop. According to legend, he later ordered that geese should be eaten once a year as punishment for betraying him.

In Denmark, Saint Martin became known as Morten, and St. Martin’s Eve is celebrated on 10 November, the evening before St. Martin’s Day. Today, duck is most commonly served instead of goose, as it is better suited to a smaller household.
